The factory was founded on 3 July 1935 under the name "Argenta Schokoladenfabrik AG" Wernigerode. It originated from the "Burgmühlen Schokoladenfabrik Wernigerode" which was owned by Rudolph Karstadt AG and the West German Kaufhof AG.
Like many others in East Germany, the Argenta Schokoladenfabrik AG was expropriated. After World War II, it is continued under the name VEB Schokoladenfabrik Wernigerode and from 1951 as VEB (K) Argenta Süßwarenfabrik Wernigerode.
This year threatened the Wernigeröder chocolate history the end. Because the chocolate production in the factory should be switched to the production of banded tobacco. In fact, it was already clear which products should continue to be produced by other companies in the chocolate industry, existing employees were given training in tobacco production and the new machines were ready for use. Despite all the plans and preparations, the chocolate makers, together with committed employees, succeeded in getting the responsible minister in Berlin to change their mind.
The quality and variety of Argenta products never stopped, despite the one or other of the farm's economic problems, and they were always in high demand. "Brockensplitter", "Harzer Tröpfchen", "Puffreisschokolade" or "Blätterkrokant" are just a few treats known throughout Germany. Incidentally, the Brocken splinter existed long before Argenta under the name "Harzer cream granite splitter" and was also produced in Wernigerode by the company Maul's cocoa and chocolate factory.
The VEB became a GmbH. Only came with the turn, unfortunately, the "off" for Argenta. The wholesale did not accept the ordered goods. Although the stores kept asking for the products, Argenta remained on its stocks.
The traditional brand Argenta is u.a. with well-known products such as Nougattüten and Brockensplitter, but also with new creations for every taste again successful on the market. Since 2004, production at the new production sites in Weissenfels, Saxony-Anhalt, has been in excellent quality.
